$20.00

Latin name: Schisandra chinensis
Uses: Medicinal
Lifecycle: Perennial (zones 4-8)

A perennial woody vine, native to Northern China and Japan, also know as Wu-wei-zi. The berries have a complex flavour profile being bitter, sweet, sour, salty and pungent, which is why it is sometimes called “the five-flavour-berry”.

Schisandra is said to have properties pertaining to all five elements in Traditional Chinese Medicine, which means it works in multiple “meridians” within the body to restore internal balance and health. Because it impacts nearly every organ system within the human body it has dozens of uses and benefits. This potent adaptogen is said to enhance immune function, help fight adrenal fatigue and heart problems, aide digestion, support hormonal balance, nourish the skin and improve focus, concentration, memory, mental energy and sleep. The leaves of the Schisandra vine also make an energizing tea.

The vine prefers moist soils and dappled shade. It can be grown on a trellis or arbour.

Two plants are required for pollination.
