Growing:
This is a 'Double dormant' species which normally must spend two consecutive winters in the ground in order to break dormancy. The following warm-cold-warm sequence is known to speed germination, though patience is required. Allow any ungerminated seeds a second year.
Warm-stratify 60 days in a bag with semi-moist peat moss or sand. Then cold-stratify 60 days in the fridge or cold-frame with fresh seed-starting mix. Sow seeds 3/4" deep in pots with fresh seed-starting mix. Place in warm indirect sunlight and keep moist. Germination should occur in 4-6 weeks. Repot as needed. Transplant in permanent location once well-established after last spring frost. Protect during the first few winters. Prefers and performs best in full sun, will tolerate partial shade. Trees grown from seed take from 5 to 8 years to start bearing fruit; grafted trees often flower heavily in their third year. Self-Fertile
